“My name is Sunaina Devi and I am 26 years old. My husband’s name is Birbal Bhuinya. He is a farmer. We live in Kasmaar Village, Palamu District in Jharkhand, India. We have been married for eight years. Before, there was no source of water here. I had to go to the river to collect water which is about 500 feet away from my house. I’d go to the river five times a day to do all my household chores and it would take me about two hours per day. The water was not good and tasted bad, mostly because of all the people that used the same water to wash their clothes and utensils in the river. When we’d drink the water, we would get sick from it. I also suffered from head and neck pain because I’d carry this water in pots on my head. One time when I was at the river collecting water, my young daughter got caught up in the current and swept away. I was so scared, but thankfully others nearby helped rescue her. We requested a hand pump many times for our village. One time they were going to install it, but a higher caste person threatened the driller with a gun so that he did not bring us the pump, but instead installed it near the higher caste person’s home. A man named Om Prakash saw our struggle. He connected neverthirst to our village. They surveyed and selected our village. Drilling was done at the point selected by the staff and a good quality hand pump was installed here. I want to thank neverthirst and Om Prakash for helping us resolve our water problem. “मेरा नाम सुनैना देवी है और मेरी उम्र 26 साल है। मेरे पति का नाम बीरबल भुइंया है। वह एक किसान है। हम झारखंड, भारत के पलामू जिले के कस्मार गांव में रहते हैं। हमारी शादी को आठ साल हो चुके हैं। पहले यहां पानी का कोई स्रोत नहीं था। मुझे नदी में पानी लेने जाना था जो मेरे घर से लगभग 500 फीट दूर है। मैं अपने घर के सारे काम करने के लिए दिन में पांच बार नदी में जाता था और इसमें मुझे प्रतिदिन लगभग दो घंटे लगते थे। पानी अच्छा नहीं था और स्वाद में भी बुरा था, ज्यादातर लोगों के कारण जो नदी में अपने कपड़े और बर्तन धोने के लिए एक ही पानी का इस्तेमाल करते थे। जब हम पानी पीते थे, तो हम उससे बीमार हो जाते थे। मुझे सिर और गर्दन में भी दर्द हुआ क्योंकि मैं इस पानी को अपने सिर पर बर्तन में ढोता था। एक बार जब मैं नदी पर पानी इकट्ठा कर रहा था, मेरी छोटी बेटी धारा में फंस गई और बह गई। मैं बहुत डरी हुई थी, लेकिन शुक्र है कि आसपास के लोगों ने उसे बचाने में मदद की। हमने अपने गांव के लिए कई बार हैंडपंप की मांग की। एक बार वे इसे स्थापित करने जा रहे थे, लेकिन एक उच्च जाति के व्यक्ति ने ड्रिल करने वाले को बंदूक से धमकाया ताकि वह हमारे लिए पंप न लाए, बल्कि इसे उच्च जाति के व्यक्ति के घर के पास स्थापित कर दे। ओम प्रकाश नाम के एक शख्स ने हमारा संघर्ष देखा। वह कभी प्यासे हमारे गांव से जुड़ा। उन्होंने सर्वेक्षण किया और हमारे गांव का चयन किया। कर्मचारियों द्वारा चुने गए बिंदु पर ड्रिलिंग की गई और यहां एक अच्छी गुणवत्ता वाला हैंडपंप लगाया गया। पानी की समस्या को हल करने में हमारी मदद करने के लिए मैं नेवरथर्स्ट और ओम प्रकाश को धन्यवाद देना चाहता हूं। मैं हमारी मदद करने के लिए दानदाताओं को भी धन्यवाद देता हूं।”
